Simply dragging it onto the footage will highlight the level of the audio control. Next option is Audio Effects which is really just a fade in and fade out option. The separate clips do have to be on the same track for a seamless transition. Simply placing the chosen transition over the two clips will make the effect work. There are some transitions that are a bit too over the top but there is also a couple that I would consider usable between different clips.
